The Section of Forensic Genetics, Department of Forensic Medicine, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen performs all forensic genetic investigations in crime, paternity and immigration cases in Denmark, The Faroe Islands and Greenland. The section is responsible for teaching and research in forensic genetics at the University of Copenhagen. Niels Morling is director of the Department of Forensic Medicine and the Section of Forensic Genetics, professor of forensic genetics at two universities, doctor of medical sciences, author of hundreds of research papers, vice-president of the International Society for Forensic Genetics (ISFG), chairman of the European DNA Profiling Group (EDNAP) and of The English Speaking Working Group of the ISFG, as well as a member of a number of scientific and administrative boards related to forensic genetics.

The research activities of the department include the development of genetic markers that can predict physical traits and ancestry, medical forensic pathology – especially heart diseases, genetic investigations in skin cancer, forensic pharmacogenetic investigations, statistical methods for the analysis of DNA results in crime cases, investigations of polymorphisms of the X- and Y-chromosomes, mtDNA and SNP markers, and the analysis of mRNA, microRNA and methylated DNA for the identification of body tissues and fluids from forensic stains.

The department is involved in teaching forensic genetics at national and international university levels.
