Institute Presentation

The Institute of Legal Medicine with a current total of 40 staff has many years of experience in forensic case work and contributed substantially to the development and implementation of genetic technologies into forensic investigations in Germany. Members of the institute published groundbreaking works in various relevant fields, such as forensic molecular genetics of humans and non-human species, body fluid identification, and alternative DNA markers (X-, Y-, mtDNA- markers). The Münster group has an excellent track record in scientific publications with recently published contributions to the field of body fluid identification.

The institute combines three of the main forensic areas:

- Forensic pathology with autopsy suite and histology unit
- Forensic toxicology with drug and alcohol analysis
- Forensic molecular genetics with forensic DNA analysis and kinship testing

The section of forensic molecular genetics is a unit of modern and well-equipped laboratories and an excellent core facility on genomics is available part of the faculty of medicine so that further technologies are easily accessible, if needed.

A total of ten staff in the molecular genetics unit comprises highly experienced and dedicated personalities, which will all contribute to the success of the EuroForGen project.
